About Compress JPEG

JPEG compression throws away detail your eye can't see. Phone cameras save at very high quality, so re-saving at 75–85% typically cuts the size by 60–90% with no visible change.

Very large photos are also scaled to a sensible size if you choose a maximum width, which saves even more.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Compression happens in your browser on your own device. Your photos are never sent to a server.

What quality should I use?

80% is a great default. Go down to 60–70% for the web, or up to 90% for printing.

Is JPG and JPEG the same?

Yes. They're the same format; the shorter extension comes from old Windows versions.
