Why convert PSD to JPG?

Not everyone has Photoshop, and PSD files are too big to share.

JPG works everywhere: every phone, computer, website and app accepts it, and photos stay small enough to email.

What to expect

  • Layers are flattened into one image, exactly as the document looks with its visible layers. The PSD needs to be saved with “Maximize compatibility” on (Photoshop's default).
  • JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
  • JPG is lossy, so the file gets much smaller. At the default quality (90%) the difference is very hard to see; you can change it before converting.

Previewing and sharing a Photoshop file without Photoshop

Clients, printers and colleagues often can't open a PSD. Converting gives a JPG of the document exactly as it looks with its visible layers, ready to email or post.

The PSD is read in your browser, so you don't need Photoshop or a subscription.

Tips

  • The PSD must have been saved with “Maximize compatibility” on (Photoshop's default). Without it, the file has no flattened image to read.
  • Hidden layers stay hidden in the JPG.
  • For a transparent background, convert to PNG instead.

About the formats

PSD (Adobe Photoshop Document, 1990) is Photoshop's own working format. It keeps layers, masks and editing data, which makes files large and only readable in software that understands Photoshop documents.

JPG (JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression that throws away detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photos small. JPG and JPEG are the same format: the shorter extension comes from old Windows versions that only allowed three letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PSD to JPG?

Drop your PSD files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each JPG downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your PSD files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many PSD files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

What happens to the transparent background?

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas become white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Do I need Photoshop?

No. The PSD is read in your browser. You get the flattened image as it appears in Photoshop. Files saved without “Maximize compatibility” don't contain that image; re-save them with it on.

Will I lose quality converting to JPG?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default 90% quality the difference is practically invisible. Move the Quality slider up for the highest fidelity or down for smaller files.

Can I edit the layers?

No, this converts the flattened image. To edit layers without Photoshop, try a free editor such as Photopea or GIMP.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
