Why convert HEIC to JPG?

HEIC photos from an iPhone often won't open on Windows, Android or upload forms.

JPG works everywhere: every phone, computer, website and app accepts it, and photos stay small enough to email.

What to expect

  • Live Photos convert to a still image. Location and camera details (EXIF) are not copied into the new file, which is safer for sharing.

Getting iPhone photos to open anywhere

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. The files are about half the size of a JPG, but Windows only shows them after installing the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store, and many job portals, government forms and online shops still reject them.

JPG is the safe choice when someone else has to open the photo: every device, website and printer reads it. A 12 MP iPhone photo usually becomes a 2 to 4 MB JPG at 90% quality.

Tips

  • AirDrop or email from the iPhone often converts to JPG automatically. Photos copied with a USB cable or synced through iCloud for Windows usually stay HEIC.
  • To stop getting HEIC at all, set the iPhone to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.
  • If an upload form has a size limit, convert first and then use the image compressor to reach the exact size.

About the formats

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, 2015) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos since iOS 11. It keeps photos at about half the size of JPG, but many Windows PCs, websites and apps can't open it. HEIC and HEIF are the same container format. HEIC is the name Apple uses for photos stored with HEVC compression.

JPG (JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression that throws away detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photos small. JPG and JPEG are the same format: the shorter extension comes from old Windows versions that only allowed three letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Drop your HEIC files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each JPG downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your HEIC files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many HEIC files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

Why won't my iPhone photos open on Windows?

iPhones save photos as HEIC to save space. Windows needs an extra codec to open them, and many websites reject them. Converting to JPG fixes that. On the iPhone you can also switch to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to take new photos as JPG.

Will I lose quality converting to JPG?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default 90% quality the difference is practically invisible. Move the Quality slider up for the highest fidelity or down for smaller files.

Why do some HEIC files contain several photos?

Burst shots and Live Photos store extra frames or a short video next to the main image. The converter keeps the main still photo, which is the one you see in the Photos app.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
