What is Form W-4?
New employees fill in a W-4 when they start a job, and anyone can submit a new one to change their withholding, for example after marriage, a second job or a new child. It goes to your employer, not the IRS.
Filling it in: quick tips
- Step 1: name, address, SSN and filing status. This is the only required step besides signing.
- Step 2: only if you have more than one job or your spouse works.
- Step 3: claim dependents if your income qualifies.
- Step 4: optional adjustments for other income, deductions or extra withholding.
- Step 5: sign and date.
