Why convert GIF to PNG?

GIFs are limited to 256 colours and can be large.

PNG keeps every pixel and supports transparency, so nothing is lost and it is accepted by every app and website.

What to expect

  • Animated GIFs: the first frame is converted.

GIF to PNG for graphics and pixel art

PNG is the modern replacement for still GIFs: it's lossless like GIF but supports millions of colours and smooth, semi-transparent edges. Converting doesn't change how the picture looks; it just puts it in a format every editor handles well.

Animated GIFs give their first frame as a still PNG.

Tips

  • Pixel art keeps its hard edges; avoid resizing it with smoothing afterwards.
  • GIF transparency carries over to the PNG.
  • The PNG can be smaller or larger than the GIF depending on the image; for small graphics both are tiny.

About the formats

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format, 1987) is one of the oldest web formats. It is limited to 256 colours per frame but supports simple transparency and animation, which is why it is still used for short loops and memes.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics, 1996) is a lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly. It supports full transparency, which makes it the standard for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to PNG?

Drop your GIF files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each PNG downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your GIF files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many GIF files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

Will I lose quality converting to PNG?

No. PNG is lossless, so the converted image keeps every pixel of the original.

Does PNG support animation?

Standard PNG doesn't. APNG does, but support in editors is patchy, so animations are best kept as GIF or WebP.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
