Why convert TIFF to JPG?

TIFF files are large and most websites and phones can't display them.

JPG works everywhere: every phone, computer, website and app accepts it, and photos stay small enough to email.

What to expect

  • Multi-page TIFFs: the first page is converted.
  • JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
  • JPG is lossy, so the file gets much smaller. At the default quality (90%) the difference is very hard to see; you can change it before converting.

Turning scans and print files into shareable JPGs

Scanners, fax software and professional cameras often save TIFF because it is lossless and print-ready. The catch is size (a single A4 scan at 300 DPI can be 25 MB) and that phones, browsers and most websites won't display it.

Converting to JPG at 90% quality usually brings a scan down to 1 to 2 MB with no visible difference, small enough to email or upload.

Tips

  • Multi-page TIFFs (common from scanners and fax) convert their first page. For all pages, use TIFF to PDF instead.
  • Text-only scans in black and white often stay smaller and sharper as PNG than JPG.
  • Keep the TIFF as your archive copy; JPG is for sharing.

About the formats

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format, 1986) is a high-quality format used in printing, scanning and professional photography. It stores images without quality loss and can hold several pages in one file. TIF and TIFF are the same format with a different file extension.

JPG (JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression that throws away detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photos small. JPG and JPEG are the same format: the shorter extension comes from old Windows versions that only allowed three letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert TIFF to JPG?

Drop your TIFF files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each JPG downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your TIFF files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many TIFF files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

What happens to the transparent background?

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas become white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Will I lose quality converting to JPG?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default 90% quality the difference is practically invisible. Move the Quality slider up for the highest fidelity or down for smaller files.

Will the JPG keep the DPI of my scan?

The pixel dimensions stay the same, so the image prints at the same size and sharpness. Some apps show 72 DPI in the file info, but that label doesn't change the pixels; set the size you want when printing.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
