Why convert JPG to PNG?

JPG has no transparency and loses a little quality each time it's re-saved.

PNG keeps every pixel and supports transparency, so nothing is lost and it is accepted by every app and website.

What to expect

  • Converting to PNG keeps every pixel of your JPG, but it can't restore detail that JPG compression already removed.

What converting JPG to PNG does (and doesn't) do

Converting a JPG to PNG stops any further quality loss: from now on you can edit and save as often as you like. It does not undo the compression already in the JPG, and it does not give the image a transparent background.

The usual reasons to do it are a website or app that only accepts PNG, editing the image several times, or preparing a picture to have its background removed.

Tips

  • The PNG will be several times larger than the JPG. That's expected: PNG stores every pixel exactly.
  • For a transparent background, convert to PNG and then use the background remover.
  • Blocky edges around text in a JPG are compression artefacts; they carry over into the PNG.

About the formats

JPG (JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression that throws away detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photos small. JPG and JPEG are the same format: the shorter extension comes from old Windows versions that only allowed three letters.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics, 1996) is a lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly. It supports full transparency, which makes it the standard for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Drop your JPG files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each PNG downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your JPG files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many JPG files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

Will I lose quality converting to PNG?

No. PNG is lossless, so the converted image keeps every pixel of the original.

Does JPG to PNG make the image transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background. Remove the background as a separate step if you need transparency.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
