About Text to Binary

Computers store every character as bytes, and each byte is 8 binary digits (bits). The letter A is 01000001. Characters outside English, like é or emoji, take 2 to 4 bytes in UTF-8.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some characters longer than 8 bits?

UTF-8 uses 1 byte for English letters and 2–4 bytes for accents, other scripts and emoji, so they show as 16–32 bits.
