About Compress PDF
Most of a big PDF's size is its photos and scanned pages. This compressor shrinks those images to a sensible resolution and re-saves them efficiently, while text, vector graphics and links are left exactly as they were, so text stays sharp and selectable.
For the smallest possible file, tick “Maximum compression”: every page is turned into one optimised image. That works on any PDF, but text can no longer be selected or searched.
You see the new size before downloading, and if a file can't be made smaller we tell you instead of giving you a bigger one.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. Your files are never sent to a server, so they stay private.
Which level should I pick?
Medium suits most documents. Use Light for small text in scans or detailed photos, Strong to get under a strict size limit.
Will my text stay selectable?
Yes, with the normal setting only images are compressed. Only “Maximum compression” turns pages into images.
Why didn't my PDF get smaller?
PDFs made of text (from Word, for example) are already small: there are no big images to shrink.
