Why convert BMP to JPG?

BMP files are uncompressed and very large.

JPG works everywhere: every phone, computer, website and app accepts it, and photos stay small enough to email.

What to expect

  • JPG is lossy, so the file gets much smaller. At the default quality (90%) the difference is very hard to see; you can change it before converting.

Shrinking BMP files

BMP stores every pixel without compression, so files are huge: a 1920×1080 screenshot is about 6 MB. As a JPG the same image is usually a few hundred KB, which makes it practical to email or upload.

BMP files typically come from old Windows software, Paint, some medical and industrial devices, and scanners.

Tips

  • Screenshots and diagrams with text stay sharper as PNG and are still far smaller than BMP.
  • Use 90% quality or above if the image contains small text.
  • Keep the BMP if a machine or program needs it back in that format.

About the formats

BMP (Windows Bitmap, 1990) is a simple, uncompressed Windows format. Files are large because every pixel is stored as-is, but almost any program, including very old software and embedded devices, can read it.

JPG (JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression that throws away detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photos small. JPG and JPEG are the same format: the shorter extension comes from old Windows versions that only allowed three letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to JPG?

Drop your BMP files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each JPG downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your BMP files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many BMP files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

Will I lose quality converting to JPG?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default 90% quality the difference is practically invisible. Move the Quality slider up for the highest fidelity or down for smaller files.

Does BMP to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPG is lossy, but at 90% it's very hard to see. Choose PNG for a lossless and still much smaller file.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
