Why convert GIF to JPG?

GIFs are limited to 256 colours and can be large.

JPG works everywhere: every phone, computer, website and app accepts it, and photos stay small enough to email.

What to expect

  • Animated GIFs: the first frame is converted.
  • JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
  • JPG is lossy, so the file gets much smaller. At the default quality (90%) the difference is very hard to see; you can change it before converting.

Getting a still image from a GIF

Converting a GIF to JPG gives you a single still image, taken from the first frame. It's handy for thumbnails, printing or places that don't allow animations.

GIF only has 256 colours, so photos inside GIFs often show banding. The JPG keeps exactly what the GIF shows; it can't add the missing colours back.

Tips

  • Need the whole animation? Keep the GIF itself: a still format can only hold one frame.
  • Transparent parts of the GIF become white in the JPG.
  • For pixel art and graphics, PNG keeps hard edges better than JPG.

About the formats

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format, 1987) is one of the oldest web formats. It is limited to 256 colours per frame but supports simple transparency and animation, which is why it is still used for short loops and memes.

JPG (JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. It uses lossy compression that throws away detail the eye barely notices, which keeps photos small. JPG and JPEG are the same format: the shorter extension comes from old Windows versions that only allowed three letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to JPG?

Drop your GIF files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each JPG downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your GIF files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many GIF files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

What happens to the transparent background?

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas become white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Will I lose quality converting to JPG?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default 90% quality the difference is practically invisible. Move the Quality slider up for the highest fidelity or down for smaller files.

Which frame do I get?

The first frame of the animation.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
