What is Form 8821?
Use Form 8821 to authorise access to your records. To let someone act for you with the IRS, a different form (2848) is needed.
Filling it in: quick tips
- Line 1: your details; line 2: the person or firm you're authorising.
- Line 3: the tax matters, forms and years they may see.
- Sign and date, then send as the instructions describe (online, fax or mail).
These tips are a quick guide, not tax advice. The form's own instructions on irs.gov are the final word. Form version: Rev. January 2021, checked October 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Form 8821 and Form 2848?
Form 8821 only lets someone see your tax information. Form 2848 (power of attorney) lets a qualified representative act for you.
Is my information uploaded?
No. The PDF opens in this browser tab and everything you type stays on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so your SSN, address and signature never leave your computer or phone.
Is it really free?
Yes. No trial, no subscription, no sign-up and no watermark. You download the finished PDF straight away. (Some “free” PDF fillers charge a small trial fee that turns into a monthly subscription. This one never asks for a card.)
Can I sign it here?
Yes. Press Signature to draw it with your mouse or finger, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a photo of your signature, then place it on the signature line.
