About the formats
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, 2015) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos since iOS 11. It keeps photos at about half the size of JPG, but many Windows PCs, websites and apps can't open it. HEIC and HEIF are the same container format. HEIC is the name Apple uses for photos stored with HEVC compression.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format, 1987) is one of the oldest web formats. It is limited to 256 colours per frame but supports simple transparency and animation, which is why it is still used for short loops and memes.

Why won't my iPhone photos open on Windows?
iPhones save photos as HEIC to save space. Windows needs an extra codec to open them, and many websites reject them. Converting to GIF fixes that. On the iPhone you can also switch to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to take new photos as JPG.
Will I lose quality converting to GIF?
No. GIF is lossless, so the converted image keeps every pixel of the original.
