Your images are processed in this browser tab and never uploaded.

Why convert HEIC to AVIF?

HEIC photos from an iPhone often won't open on Windows, Android or upload forms.

AVIF gives the smallest files of any image format, ideal for fast websites.

What to expect

  • Live Photos convert to a still image. Location and camera details (EXIF) are not copied into the new file, which is safer for sharing.
  • AVIF encoding takes a few seconds per large photo because it compresses much harder than other formats.

How to convert HEIC to AVIF

Add your files

Drop your HEIC files into the box or tap “select files”. Add as many as you like.

Pick the options

About the formats

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, 2015) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos since iOS 11. It keeps photos at about half the size of JPG, but many Windows PCs, websites and apps can't open it. HEIC and HEIF are the same container format. HEIC is the name Apple uses for photos stored with HEVC compression.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format, 2019) is the newest major image format, based on the AV1 video codec. It usually produces the smallest files of all, often half the size of JPG, with transparency and HDR support.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to AVIF?

Drop your HEIC files into the box above (or tap Select files), check the options, then press Convert. Each AVIF downloads on its own, or you can download them all as one ZIP file.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your HEIC files are never sent to a server, so they stay private, and it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit on how many HEIC files I can convert?

No. Convert as many as you like, for free, without signing up. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

Why won't my iPhone photos open on Windows?

iPhones save photos as HEIC to save space. Windows needs an extra codec to open them, and many websites reject them. Converting to AVIF fixes that. On the iPhone you can also switch to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to take new photos as JPG.

Will I lose quality converting to AVIF?

AVIF uses lossy compression, but at the default 90% quality the difference is practically invisible. Move the Quality slider up for the highest fidelity or down for smaller files.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.
